Mjolner is a bar/restaurant in Melbourne and Sydney, not to be confused with Mjolnir, hammer of Thor. There are some umlauts in one too, which is hard to type on an ANSI keyboard without some character map trickery, but I digress…
Mjolner is a viking themed bar, complete with medieval iron, rustic tables and imposing heavy door. The fact that the Melbourne one is on Hardware street adds to the mystique, as I nearly got run over by 2 errant scooters trying to find it, and almost ended up at an accountant (tax time is coming kids!).
Upon entering is the classic ‘upstairs/downstairs’ thing – not wanting to tempt fate, and to have a faithful manservant, we headed downstairs to the ‘restaurant’, where we were sat with the skins of dead animals and a repurposed tree for a table… all keeping with the theme.
Okay, lets get this straight – you can drink out of a horn. And yes, there is a trick to it, which one of our compatriots forgot and spilled mead everywhere. Staff are on hand to advise, so I recommend listening to them, as recommendations are good and they really know what they’re doing. Note: horns are 500ml, so I recommend settling in and trying a few brews.
The menu is tight, but varied. Microbrew fans will be fine, and if they get a horn, will be in bearded viking heaven. Beer selection is good, there’s a mead, plus cocktails for your princesses (regardless of gender, they are AWESOME!). Food is ‘traditional’, a hollowed out bread loaf stuffed with your dead enemies (and sugar!).
Overall, there is no reason why you shouldn’t go, have a couple of horns, and enjoy yourself.
